Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is an initiative to foster a love of reading and to promote early childhood literacy in preschool children by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month.
It was started in 1995 by Dolly Parton herself, in her home county in east Tennessee. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family's income.
Dolly's Imagination Library became so popular that in the year 2000 she announced that she would make the program available for replication to any community that was willing to partner with her to support it locally.
In 2009, United Way of Staunton, Augusta County & Waynesboro partnered with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to bring this program to the children of our area. Since then, we have been able to help over 4,500 local kids receive free monthly books.
The Imagination Library is for children ages 0-5 that live in Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County.

"The seeds of dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world."
It costs $30 to send one child a free monthly book for a year. Please consider sponsoring a local child by donating to Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Contact Deirdre Kellner at deirdre@unitedwaysaw.org for additional information.
